It Begins

In my free time I'm an avid reader and reviewer. I have another blog that I post my reviews to and I also post them on Goodreads and BookLikes. I have hundreds of friends on those sites that are also avid readers. I interact with them every day, joke with them, share real life stories with them, but most importantly, I talk books with them. Recently a new genre has sprung up in our world and gained momentum. It's called New Adult and it focuses on those years of self discovery after girlhood but before you can really call yourself a 'woman'. Cue cheesy Britney Spears song:

On the surface this sounds pretty neat. I'm sure we all remember those years and most of us would probably like to forget part them or at least go back and shake ourselves until we see reason, lord knows I would. But the thing is, all those mistakes, all that silly, hormonally driven behavior has shaped us, taught us valuable lessons, made us who we are today. Wouldn't it be great to go back and live some of those lessons through someone else's eyes? To watch them come into themselves? Of course it would. Good luck sifting through all the shite to actually find those stories in this genre.

Instead of coming of age we get coming until I pass out. No really. Most of these books are nothing but poorly constructed romances with detailed sex scene after detailed sex scene. These romances are almost always the unhealthy, volatile kind. Angst people. Fuck valuable life lessons when you can write about a love triangle. Fuck characters with depth when you can write the same old Mary Sue that's been the bane of my reading existence since I was a preteen. Oh and don't forget the love interest, that tattooed bad boy that I like to call The Ragebeast. Just for fun why don't we add in a strong theme like rape or incest and not handle it to the depth it deserves. Let's do no research and write about nothing but the stereotypes that we've learned through the media.

I could write a novella about all the other recurring tropes and themes in these books but instead of doing that I figured it would be much more fun to write a parody of them all and that's what this blog is for. Terrified that I might forget one or two, I polled my friends. You should check that thread out if you want to know how truly aggravating the repetition of certain themes are.

My goal here is write the most tropish NA novel that has ever been written. Hopefully I can do that with some humor.
